ISO currently lists the new ISO 9001 edition as under development and shows September 2026 as the planned publication month. Details can still change until final publication.
Can we already be certified to ISO 9001:2026?
No. Certification to ISO 9001:2026 is only possible after publication of the standard and the corresponding transition of certification bodies. Before that, the work is preparation, gap analysis and transition planning.
Should we still certify to ISO 9001:2015 in 2026?
That can make sense if customers, tenders or supplier approvals require a certificate now. In that case, we build the system so the later transition creates as little additional work as possible.
What changes are expected?
The revision is expected to place stronger emphasis on quality culture, leadership, opportunity management, climate relevance, the Harmonized Structure and clearer terminology. I frame the measures so they remain useful even if individual details shift before the final edition.
How long does an ISO 9001:2026 gap analysis take?
For typical SMEs, the analysis usually takes one to two weeks. Implementation depends on maturity: well-maintained ISO 9001:2015 systems often need targeted updates, older systems may need a broader QMS refresh.
